Thank you for asking, Glen. I've been planning on putting up a topic relating to Otherkin but just have not gotten around to it. The word "Otherkin" is based on the term for the realm of fae known as the Otherworld. Otherkin are people here on Earth who feel that they are not exactly human. The most common belief is that they are spirits misplaced into a human body. They feel like they really don't belong in this world and are constantly searching for where they truly belong. Most people claim to be fae Otherkin, but there are really many different kinds. There are merfolk (who have a strong connection to the water), dragons, Therianthropes (were-animals, which can be cats, wolves, bears, etc...), faeries, vampires, and so on.
I've known some witches who believe that they are what they are because they are actually fae trapped in a human body. I believe that I am actually a mermaid Otherkin because when I meditate, I "shapeshift" into my mermaid form and it sustains me for a period of time.
Are there any other people here who feel that they might be some form of Otherkin?

I myself don't feel I am otherkin. I don't feel out of place really. I always felt more comfortable in water but I don't feel like I don't belong in this world. I can trace my connection to water (and earth) through my astrological natal chart, where I have a high concentration of earth and water connections and aspects. I did pretend to be a mermaid often, when swimming. But not for feeling like I was one, just because I love swimming and loved to pretend. I've known a couple others who feel they were otherkin. I think it's very interesting. I always wanted to ask things like, did you feel you were otherkin before you knew there was such a term and culture?

I am not sure if I feel like I am a otherkin don't no if it is a mental or physical state but some time I feel like I am running with wolves or dog in some of my dream and had my bosses tell me that I am alpha male at time too.

Is it one of those things where you can just tell? I mean, of course I've felt out of place. But I'm not sure if it's the same sort of out of place.

unfortunately it takes a long time and alot of inner looking to find that you are... let alone finding what you are or could be.... some of the ways to tell (at least what helped me) was to concentrate on my dreams and where my thoughts would go during meditation as i sorted them.... and i noticed recurrences and took them and looked them up and researched what those recurrences could be. i dont know if that helped at all but ^_^

That helps! Now that you say it, it does make sense that it would take time. I guess that's something I will pay more attention to now.

It does actually take time. For me, I knew for a long time that I was not "human", but "elf" didn't quite fit me. I love water and I love to be around it. I just cannot live somewhere that is not next to a body of water of some sort. It's been years of searching before I discovered that I am actually either a mermaid or an undine. I'm still trying to figure it out 100%.

one of the things that greatly helped me narrow it down was the otherkin shared traits to my current actions.... hmmm an example would be.... a mermaid otherkin may never want to leave the water when they are swimming they just get that "at home" feeling when they are there in the water ^_^ other traits would depend on the type of otherkin... but a good start is looking at the things you get that "at home" feeling with or wants for things that are "out of the ordinary" ... (ps i dont like using quotes like that but there was no other way to do it )

Well, like you said I feel "at home" in the water. However, I do feel that I am supposed to have fairy wings. So I think I am actually a merfairy. It just seems to fit more than being just a fairy or just a mermaid, you know? I always feel like someone chopped my wings off or something, yet whenever I'm in the water I swim like I belong in it.
