A slightly misshapen being that lives inside the hills, they are very tall, often described as giants. Within the hills they have houses made of gold and crystal, with large chests full of money all about.
They can be friendly, will do business with men including lending money, but should never be fully trusted. They steal women and children, poison men, and have other bad habits.
They like to drink and dance, but dislike loud noises such as children playing on or rolling down the hillside, which is their rooftop. They also dislike the ringing of church bells, and may attempt to destroy churches that threaten their peace and quiet.
Trolls are afraid of thunder and will retreat inside their hills during a thunderstorm. Their fear of thunder is so great that they also cannot bear any sound resembling thunder such as the beating of a drum. To banish trolls from the land, beat a drum once a day.
They are shapeshifters, can become invisible, can see the future, bestow wealth or take it away, and grant superhuman strength to anyone.
